Before showing you all the steps you need to follow to obtain a Social Security card in the United States, you need to understand the importance of this legal document and how it can help you in your job if you already have asylum.
It’s essential for working legally, filing taxes, accessing government benefits, and establishing your credit history. If you’re an immigrant and already have a work permit, you should also receive your Social Security card; however, this no longer happens automatically as it used to.
If you already have your work permit (known as an Employment Authorization Document or EAD) but haven’t received your Social Security card, there are certain steps you must take, and it’s important to keep these prerequisites in mind:
Explain that you have already received your work permit, but not your Social Security card . You can call the national number 1-800-772-1213 or contact your local office directly. To find the nearest one, enter your ZIP code in the “ZIP” section of this official SSA website: https://secure.ssa.gov/ICON/main.jsp
You can complete it online (in English) or download and print it. If you complete it online, select the “I-766 Employment Authorization Document (EAD) Card” option as proof of authorization. If you complete it on paper, select the “Lawfully Admitted Alien with Permission to Work” option in the section corresponding to your immigration status.
